Who is paying for the meal? Feat. Daniel Oh

Two friends pass on the street after not seeing one another for quite some time. A is a successful business man, and B is a Kindergarten teacher …

A: Do you want to go out for dinner to catch up sometime?

B: Sure… when and where?

A: Meet me at the steakhouse tomorrow night at 7.

B: Alright, sounds good. See you then.

The two friends meet the next day to eat, and after the meal there exists some non-verbal confusion. The question, is, who pays for the meal?

Responses include:

1) A should pay and is rude not too because he invited B

2) B should not assume anything and should ask A

3) A and B should split the bill evenly as they are friends.

4) A should assume that he is paying because he has more money.

The response that one chooses revolves around two points. One is uncertainty tolerance. If the second answer is chosen, the result is that B is very uncertainty intolerant. The second point is power distance. If 4 is chosen, the result is that A has more “power” than B.
